[Blog/Simmered Mist] The smell of curry lured me in! Fuji Ramen, a local Chinese restaurant in Higashimuroran

Blog

I had a drink at two places in Higashi Muroran, and was wandering around thinking I'd find another good place to go, when I caught the smell of curry coming from the duct of a local Chinese restaurant that looked perfect from the outside.

The smell of curry was so strong that before I knew it, I was sucked into the restaurant.

Higashimuroran "Fuji Ramen"

Fuji Ramen is a local Chinese restaurant that was founded in 1969. Muroran is a city with a thriving industry, and is known as the "city of steel." At the time, the ramen shop was open until the early hours of the morning to accommodate the workers who worked in three shifts, and continues to be open until 2:30 am today.

When it first opened, a glass of sake cost 80 yen and ramen cost 70 yen.

Chuhai and snacks

Once you enter, you'll know it's "the local Chinese restaurant."

We start off at the third bar with a sweet chuhai and some typical local Chinese snacks, gyoza and bamboo shoots.

cold sake

My stomach is starting to feel full, so I quickly switch to cold sake. Two cups of cold sake from Kunimare Brewery in Mashike, Hokkaido!

curry ramen

I didn't know this, but it seems that curry ramen is a common dish in every local Chinese restaurant in Muroran, and it's a local delicacy on a par with Muroran Yakitori. The ramen is so rich you'll want to eat it with rice, and it's a popular dish among the ladies working in the entertainment industry nearby! I'd love to see it for myself!

As I wasn't able to find any stew this time, I decided to finish off my Muroran trip with curry ramen with "motsu" (offal). It was filled with tenderly stewed pork intestines!

word used after one has been treated (esp. used after a meal)

Chef and landlady! Thank you for sharing your valuable story! My "Harunabi*" guided me to my destination by the smell of curry coming from the duct, and it was a sure thing! Thank you for working so hard until late! Local Chinese restaurants that are open until late like this are incredibly reliable. Good luck with the rest of the late-night hours!

* "Hanabi" means to decide on a restaurant by listening to the exterior and interior of the restaurant. This word was coined by Tamabukuro Kintaro.
