[Blog/Nikomi Mist] The power of the port town of Nemuro! Enjoy scallops, hot sake, and big brother at the long-established bar "Chobei"

Blog

Nemuro is a port town with a long history. It has a longer history than Hokkaido's major cities, Sapporo and Asahikawa, and is second only to Hakodate in terms of prestige.

We strolled around the bars while it was still light out, searching for "bars with great views" that are rooted in the city and are hard to find just from information on the internet.

Downtown Nemuro after 5pm

We waited for Chobei, a restaurant with the aura of a famous establishment, to open.

Chobei, founded 90 years ago

We opened smoothly after 6pm!

The dimly lit interior features an L-shaped counter, several tatami rooms, and what appears to be banquet seating in the back, making this a long-established bar with a deep sense of community.
As you go further in, the scent of the oil stove permeates the walls, and you're enveloped in the unique atmosphere of a famous northern bar, which is very relaxing.

Apparently, the shop was founded in 1935 (Showa 10), and is currently run by the second generation couple and their son, the third generation.

This is undoubtedly the oldest bar in Nemuro, having watched over this area for over 90 years, and is truly a representative bar of Nemuro.

The store is decorated with a striking bonbon clock that is over one meter tall, as well as mysterious objects that appear to be never-before-seen seafood.

Chuhai

Start off refreshing with a chuhai.

Grilled skewers

I ordered pork intestines and asparagus rolls.

The lightly seasoned, peppery, meaty Yagen is elegant.
The minimum order was two pieces, but there was only one left, so I had them grill the asparagus wrapped in pork with sauce.

Peppered Yagen Cartilage

This skewer is full of the bounty of Hokkaido, with richly flavored asparagus wrapped in flavorful pork belly.
The sweet and refreshing sauce makes you want to drink alcohol.

Flavorful scallop butter

We chose scallops from Robata, a style said to have originated in the neighboring town of Kushiro. Two large and one small. The flavor of the butter and ingredients was heavenly, and they were top-notch.

Warmed sake

We were given a hot glass of the local sake "Kita no Katsu" and got completely drunk, finishing the night tipsy!

As I got into a lively conversation with the black belt sitting next to me, I discovered that he was the president of a local supermarket called "Marche de Kitchen" in Nemuro!

The next day, he brought a paper bag full of Nemuro-only products from the supermarket to my hotel. I'll call him "Big Brother" if I may!

Not only was I able to drink at a long-established bar in Nemuro, but I am also incredibly grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime encounter!

Thank you so much again, Aniki!
