[Blog/Nikomi Mist] Ginrei, a heartwarming, long-established bar in Ome that you'll want to visit often

Ome "Silver Ridge"

The area around Ome Station is dotted with trendy izakayas.

On the way to Ginrei, I was almost sucked into a few bars that looked good, but I stuck to my original plan and arrived at Ginrei.

The shop curtain, paper lantern, and sign bearing the logo of the local sake brand "Sawanoi"! A frosted glass sliding door! The perfect exterior makes your heart leap.

Founded in 1949 (Showa 24), this establishment has been in its current location since 1963, a staple of Ome. The small, L-shaped counter is made of solid lauan wood, creating a Showa-era atmosphere. It is slightly tilted, revealing the scars of having served hundreds, even thousands, of drinkers.

Bottled beer

For large bottles, you can choose from Kirin and Asahi.

It comes with pickled Chinese cabbage with plenty of Ajinomoto and soy sauce, giving it a Showa-era feel.

Oden

In front of me, several bowls of oden floated and looked delightfully soaked. When I saw this oden pot on this frigid day, there was no way I wouldn't order some!

After much deliberation, I chose daikon radish, fish tendons, and chikuwabu. Oden and watching sumo wrestling live at a bar are a perfect match!

Eggplant dishes and yakitori

Although Ome is not a particularly eggplant producing area, there are many eggplant dishes on the menu, and they are categorized accordingly. From the menu, I ordered the unfamiliar "Shigiyaki" and liver with sauce.

The "grilled eggplant" is simply dipped into charcoal, a bold technique I've never seen before.

The end result is a delicate, juicy, and delicious grilled eggplant. Paired with ginger, it goes perfectly with a glass of hot, dry sake from the local Sawanoi brand. Mmmmm!

Thank you for the meal

As I was leaving, a woman appeared and said, "Welcome."

"Hmm?" I asked, "Are you the third generation?"

"Oh, haha," she said with a shy laugh!

I'm relieved that the issue of succession for the Zekkei Sakaba, which has been in business for over 75 years, has been resolved. I hope they do their best to aim for 100 years!
