Ome "Sekichu"

Founded in 1949 (Showa 24), Sekichu is the same age as Ginrei. If you're a bar lover like me, you'll be excited, but it might take some courage to pop in alone. The exterior of the bar exudes the aura of a famous establishment, standing alone on such a dark street at night.

Like Ginrei, the city of Ome is home to many long-established izakayas with neon signs bearing the local "Sawanoi" logo, making it difficult to choose.

The sake breweries either cover the cost of creating neon signs or sponsor signs that include the sake brand name or the name of the brewery or company. This system is no longer in use, but it's a unique charm of long-established establishments that bar lovers can't resist.

Let's enter the store

As you enter, there is a counter that can seat about four people, and in the back there is a fairly spacious tatami room and kotatsu. The chef grills yakitori between the counter and the tatami room, which is a very unusual layout.

This is the kind of restaurant where just drinking in this environment with this view is enjoyable.

Alcohol and Yakitori

Two cups of hot sake from the local Sawanoi brand. "I've made it piping hot for you," he said, showing his consideration.

The skewers are basically pork "yakitori" with only the thigh and tsukune being called "yakitori". From the back, you can get thigh, tsukune, pork belly, and cheek, all with sauce.

Kimchi and tofu stew

I ordered a seasonal stew from the main menu, but they said, "They're not making it today."

It was mid-winter in early January, but I've had the same experience with stews many times before. Without changing my expression, I ordered the "Kimchi Tofu Boiled" from the whiteboard menu.

Ome is an area in Tokyo with particularly low temperatures. Even the locals were saying, "It's cold today," during a severe cold wave. As this was our second bar, we warmed up with hot sake and felt completely warm. We were all set!

The black belts at the counter all left, and the chef told us a lot about the history of Ome.

The city of Ome, which has several castles and flourished as a post town, is dotted with long-established izakayas that are worth frequenting.

Ome is a charming town where you can experience the local atmosphere even though it is located in Tokyo. Since I've had to put off the stew, I'll be back soon!
