[Blog/Stewed Mist] Yokohama's counter yakitori bar "Okayo" will not serve stew until winter

Blog

Yokohama "Okayo"

Okayo is located along the Katabira River, past Tanukikoji Street from Yokohama. The first floor has an L-shaped counter that can seat about seven people, and although I haven't been up there yet, I've heard there is a second floor as well. It's a long-established bar that was founded in 1952 (Showa 27).

I've been here a few times, but the stew is only available in winter, so I had to postpone it this time during the rainy season. However, this is a common occurrence with stew mist, so it didn't hurt. In fact, I take it positively every time, thinking, "I now have a reason to come back."

Hoppy Black

Hoppy only has one type, black. When I asked why, I was told that the refrigerator is too small to store all the different types. When asked why it's black, he said, "It's simply delicious." I completely agree with the chef!

What's more, it's served in a special Hoppy tumbler, which is a nice little touch.

Yamaimo pickled in soy sauce and dashi

I ordered "Yam" from the menu that was immediately brought out, and was selected as the first batter to start the meal.

Chicken and peppers skewered alternatelyPea BirdThe skewers are dipped in sauce. The bitterness of the green peppers and the refreshing taste of the chicken breast, combined with the light sauce, create an unbeatable triangle.

Japanese rice wine

With the "grilled herring" in front of me, I went into full sake mode, drinking a lukewarm Hinodemori sake.

Grilled herring

A skewer of premium bony herring steamed and grilled in the Edomae style.

The quality is completely different from the home-cooked grilled herring you may have grown accustomed to as a child. The sweet sauce, reminiscent of eel, and the combination of Japanese pepper are so new it will blow your mind. It's easy to see why this is a regular on the menu.

The sophisticated operation is packed with the chef's attention to detail, focusing on what can be done in this small space.

Located near the bustling Yokohama Station, this bar is a rare example of a bar where you can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere while maintaining just the right amount of tension. Many female and young customers visit in search of this atmosphere. The atmosphere is such that you don't want to stay too long, making it a place that draws you back for more.

Next time, I'll definitely come during the colder months when there are stews available!
