Standing bar Ikoi (hereafter referred to as Ikoi) in Akabane, Kita Ward, Tokyo, is said to be a place known to all drinkers. Akabane is lined with many bars that boast low prices to attract frequent customers such as taxi drivers returning from the night shift, local regulars, and people on their way home from work, but Ikoi, which opened in 1970, is a prime example of a "super cheap standing bar where you can drink from the morning." Its third store, Standing bar Ikoi Oji Otonashigawa (hereafter referred to as Oji Otonashigawa), opened in March 2024 and has evolved into a bar that is widely accepted by the younger generation. We explore with our guide what the appeal of the new Ikoi is.
