[Bar situation] Izakaya bankruptcies surge in first half of fiscal year 2023, second highest on record

Topics.

In the first half of fiscal 2023 (April-September), there were 81 bankruptcies of "izakaya" establishments, such as bars and beer halls (an increase of 80.0% from the same period last year), the second highest number for the first half of a fiscal year after the same period in fiscal 2020 (92 cases), which was the highest number ever.

Since the first half of fiscal 2020, when 92 izakayas went bankrupt due to people refraining from going out and a sudden drop in customers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of izakayas going bankrupt had been decreasing for two consecutive years thanks to business continuity subsidies and various forms of support. However, even after the COVID-19 transition to Category 5, customer numbers have not returned to previous levels, and serious business risks such as rising prices and labor shortages have been compounded, causing the number of bankruptcies to increase significantly again.
