Starbucks Coffee Japan and Kirishima Shuzo have opened a collaborative facility scheduled to open in spring 2026. Designed by Kengo Kuma, the facility emphasizes coexistence with the local community and the environment, and features a tranquil space utilizing bamboo. The glass-enclosed botanical garden displays 80 types of subtropical plants, including coffee trees and sweet potatoes, and utilizes the thermal energy generated during the shochu production process. The facility is 100% powered by sweet potatoes, ensuring harmony with nature. Guests can relax in the seating and lawn areas, and enjoy the natural beauty of Miyakonojo from the rooftop garden.
In addition, a workshop on making compost using coffee grounds and shochu lees will also be held.
