In the early hours of December 23rd, a fire broke out in the Nakanobu shopping district in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, burning down five buildings, including Shu Sake Corporation, a liquor store that sells a wide variety of sake.
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and other sources, a series of reports of a fire, a burning smell, and smoke were received just after midnight on the 23rd, prompting the fire department to be dispatched. The fire burned about 150 square meters and took about four and a half hours to put out.
No one was late in escaping the fire, but one man in his 40s was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. His injuries are not life-threatening.
The incident occurred in a shopping district about 200 meters south of Ebara Nakanobu Station on the Tokyu Ikegami Line, in an area lined with shops deeply rooted in the local community. The official social media account of Shu Sake Corporation, the company believed to be the source of the fire, stated that the cause of the fire is currently unknown.
The Metropolitan Police Department and the Tokyo Fire Department are currently investigating the exact cause of the fire and the circumstances at the time.
We would like to express our heartfelt sympathy to the affected people. We hope for a speedy recovery and that the shopping district will once again return to its normal routine.
