Broadcast from 10:00 pm on Friday, September 6, 2024, on NHK'sDocuments 24 hours a day" will feature a candy store on a street corner in Akabane.
Gum, chocolate, ramune, snacks and more are lined up in a tightly packed space. The setting for this story is a candy store in Akabane, Tokyo. This long-established store has been selling sweets for over 75 years and is home to several retro game consoles. There are a group of four sixth graders who often play here on their days off, an elderly man who enjoys coming with his grandchild, a group of university students on their way back from job hunting, and a parent and child who have come from outside the prefecture. Dagashi continues to be popular with people of all ages and genders. What is it about this enduring appeal? We spent three summer days in the small store observing.
