[Relocation Cancelled] Saitama City | Meat Market Relocation Abandoned; Current Facility to Be Decommissioned Due to Aging

Topics.

On the 19th, Saitama City announced that it would cancel the relocation and redevelopment project for the "Central Meat Wholesale Market and Slaughterhouse" that had been scheduled for fiscal 2028.

The main reasons for the cancellation were the construction costs, which had risen to 45.3 billion yen, roughly double the original plan, and the lack of use by farmers and businesses in the city. As a result, the current aging facility will be decommissioned by fiscal year 2016.

Meanwhile, the construction of a roadside station that was planned to be located next to the market will continue, but its opening is expected to be delayed by five years to fiscal year 2021. Regarding the land where the market was scheduled to be relocated, the government will reconsider how to utilize it, taking into account the synergistic effects with the roadside station.
