Hakobayashi, a family-run gas station in Iga City, Mie Prefecture, has been in business for 60 years. In 2021, third-generation owner Hodaka Hakobayashi (46) remodeled the waiting area into a canned food dining area, revamping the station into one where customers can enjoy rare alcoholic beverages, even in Japan. This was not a gimmick, but rather a strategy to strengthen the station's role as a local disaster prevention center and increase its PR power, in order to address a future where demand will decline due to a decarbonized society, rising fuel costs, and young people's shift away from cars.
