In Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, a 57-year-old part-time employee was arrested for filling empty bottles of high-end whiskey, such as Suntory Whisky's Yamazaki 25 Year Old, with other alcoholic beverages and bringing them to a pawn shop, where he defrauded people of 1.57 million yen.
The incident occurred in February of last year, when the manager of the pawn shop noticed that the color of the fake alcohol was lighter than the real thing and reported it to the police. An inspection by the manufacturer revealed that the contents were completely different. The suspect has admitted to the charges, and as he had brought fake alcohol to the same pawn shop multiple times, the police are investigating to see if there are any other counterfeits.
