Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture, has begun sales of its lotus root shochu, "Tsuchiura Renkon," for the second year in a row to promote its local specialty, lotus root. The shochu was brewed by Mito City's Meirishurui, using 1.2 tons of lotus root from Tsuchiura. 3,000 bottles were produced, 1.5 times more than last year. Characterized by a subtle sweetness and a refreshing taste, each 720ml bottle is sold for 1,980 yen (tax included). Last year's limited-edition shochu was well-received and sold out, so this year it will be available at mass retailers and liquor stores within the prefecture, as well as online orders. Due to the difficulty of processing lotus root and the difficulty of procuring it, it is considered difficult to increase production.
