Gotanda got its name from the five rice paddies that spread across the Meguro River basin. When the Yamanote Line opened in the Meiji era, a factory district was born, taking advantage of the location's advantages of the railway and the river, but it was burned down during the war.
After the war, the ruins around the station became a black market, which later transformed into a unique entertainment district. Meanwhile, shack-style factories were built along the Meguro River and in the rubble of Gotenyama, where Japan's first tape recorder was developed. This was the beginning of Sony, Japan's first global venture after the war.
The Gotanda of today, which is not just known as a motley entertainment district but also as a hub for start-up companies, was shaped by this history. Today, we will introduce 10 famous establishments that give you a sense of Gotanda's history. We will introduce everything from corner bars to traditional taverns. Please read to the end.
