[Blog/Nikomi Mist] Have a drink with "Otaguri," a local stew from southern Nagano Prefecture!

Blog

In Iida and Ina cities in southern Nagano Prefecture, there is a local dish called "Otaguri," which is stewed horse innards. It is a clean stew that contains nothing but horse intestines and is free of impurities.

Eating horse innards

As a horse racing fan, I was reluctant to eat horse innards, but since most parts of beef and pork other than the meat are usually thrown away, and stewing is a sustainable food culture, I now eat horse innards with no qualms. Horse innards are also eaten in areas all over Japan, from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and are a common sight in areas with a historical connection to horses.

Otaguri's godfather

Before the railroad was built, horses were used to transport goods, and horse breeding was popular. That's why Iida has dishes like Sakura Nabe and Otaguri. The origin of Otaguri is said to come from "washing the long intestines of a horse while pulling them out," and Mitsuwa was the one who coined the name.

Three-ringed otaguri

Mitsuwa is open from the morning. A huge pot is filled with tons of taguri, and local regulars come one after another to get takeout. It seems that taguri has captured the hearts of Iida residents!

In addition to the ace otaguri, the menu also features kimchi, chanja, and makgeolli, giving it a Korean influence. As it's a town famous for yakiniku, Korean culture is an essential part of the town.

I'll enjoy having this

A strong style dish made with horse intestines simmered only with salt. It has the distinctive horse offal flavor, but it's neither too strong nor too strong, and it's just right. A sprinkle of Korean chili peppers completes the balance of flavor. A happy ending to the bottled beer in a large dome!

That was a delicious meal (said after meals)

There are only two places where you can eat Iida's Otaguri: here and Shimesei in front of the station. Both are unique and famous bars that I hope will continue forever. That's it.
