Matsuyama, the largest city in Shikoku
I arrived in Matsuyama at 8pm. Given the time, there were only two places I could go to for drinks that night. Of the several options, I decided on "Yonjuyon" as it had the least information and was the hardest to access.

Forty-four
Wow! It looks even more stately than in the photo!
The shutter that's not fully open and the handwritten "We're doing it" are so cool.

This is a well-established bar that was founded 50 years ago. The owner, Mr. Shijuyon, passed away about 15 years ago, and now it is run by the proprietress alone, making it a popular izakaya that is known only to those in the know.

Bottled beer
You can choose from Kirin and Asahi. Bottled beer and PET bottles are always a hit.

Oden
The style is to start with the black dashi broth. Just before closing time, I chose the well-marinated daikon radish and beef tendon.

It's a blend of Japanese mustard, miso, and vinegar, which makes it look like mustard. It goes really well with the dish. It's a perfect combination, with just the right amount of richness.

Mongo squid
The Mongolian squid is as thick as 9mm plywood. It's crispy and melt-in-your-mouth, just the right texture to eat. It makes you want to drink alcohol.

Alcohol
So, I'll have the White Crane's Loyalty and Bravery served cold.

Fried taro
Ehime's specialty taro, which can only be eaten in winter, is deep-fried until crispy and fluffy on the inside. The slightly sweet seasoning goes perfectly with the salt. Delicious!

Hot sake please!
Checkout
I struck up a conversation with the regulars who remained at the counter, and ended up staying until closing time. It was a cozy, perfect bar where time passed peacefully. I thoroughly enjoyed my night in Matsuyama, all at Forty-four!

Wow! I can see Matsuyama Castle!
