Tokyo Hachioji Sake Brewery, a sake brewery in Hachioji, Tokyo, will be offering a student-participation food education program and custom-made sake brewing to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Yano Gakuen Hachioji Jissen.
This project is a long-term program that takes place over the course of a year. As part of their food education, students from Hachioji Jissen will experience farming, such as planting and harvesting rice in rice fields in the city. They will learn about the current state of agriculture by interacting with farmers at each stage of the process, and will also participate in planning the labels that will be used on the products.
The harvested sake rice will then be used by Tokyo Hachioji Sake Brewery to brew sake and produce a commemorative sake for the 100th anniversary of Hachioji Jissen's founding. Through this program, students will also learn about the challenges facing rice farming. This unique Tokyo initiative, which brings together urban agriculture, an urban brewery, and a local educational corporation, will provide an opportunity to discover new possibilities for urban agriculture in the future.
