[Closing] Honke Owariya, a Kyoto-based restaurant with a 550-year history, will close its soba restaurant and cease confectionery production in January next year.
Honke Owariya, a long-established soba restaurant in Kyoto with a history of approximately 550 years, has announced that it will be closing its soba restaurant for an extended period of time as of January 11, 2026, and will cease manufacturing and selling sweets.
According to the company's official website, the burden on management due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the difficulty of renovating the aging company building due to the rising cost of construction materials, along with other factors such as rising prices and labor shortages, have combined to make it difficult for the company to continue operations.
Even after the store closures, the company wants to continue delivering the authentic Owariya flavor, and is considering focusing its business on selling concentrated soup stock, dried noodles, herring, and other products, with a plan to decide on its future direction by the end of the year.
